Cusp of snow
The coming weekend and the threat of snow to the south brings up part two to my snow thread.
Back in 1978 and 1979 we had blizzards. They were pretty bad, I remember being stuck in the house for like a week. It was also bitter cold and we all moved into the room where the fireplace was to keep warm. Upstairs was just too darn cold. Trains were stopped by the snow and I remember once we could get out seeing some idiot out on Acton lake with his car doing donuts. Yeah that's cold but still the lake isn't that deep unless they dredged it again recently.
Now flash forward to today and what do we get when it snows? Some hysteria and a run on the stores. Those two blizzards which shut a lot of stuff down for a long period of time I think affected the mind set of those who went through it. We remember getting locked in our homes and don't want that to happen again at least not without a run by the grocery first. Meanwhile we forget we have usually pretty good snow removal and stores all over the place.
Now we've bled it over to the current generation too. Hint of snow we close schools. Get burned once with kids coming home late because foolishly EVERYONE was sent home early at the same time and now the early dismiss is either insanely early, like why did they bother going on, or like I said before they just close to start.
Then there are those who didn't live around here then and have no idea. They are the ones who go out when everything has closed early wondering what is the problem. Why did XYZ close at 10pm I want my burger now. Meanwhile they haven't figured it out that they are only 1 of like 5 cars out when they usually couldn't count all the cars that are out at this hour. Eventually they go home after finding something open but often it's disappointment of picking a place they wouldn't normally go to.
Anyway lets hope the models hold for the weather. Of course I want the snow. I guess I'm just one of the weird ones.
